Second Grade

Susan Elsenbast

I am so excited to be your child’s second grade teacher this year!  This will be my 36th year of teaching, and my 35th year at Patterson.  It has gone by in the blink of an eye!  Building relationships with my students and their families is very important to me.  I feel lucky to be part of a profession I love and the Patterson community.  I am married with two grown sons and dog named Boji. (She is named for Lake Okoboji, which is where I grew up in NW Iowa).  When I am not at school I enjoy spending time with my family, running, reading, and baking pies.  I am excited about the work we are doing at Patterson and am looking forward to working with you this year.

Welcome to 2nd grade!!  Wow, I can’t believe this is my 31st year of teaching and my 27th year here at Patterson!  I love it here because we have such a great school, such hard-working students, a supportive staff and a great community.   I have a great family at Patterson, but also a great family at home.  My whole family shares my passion for education. My husband has been an elementary teacher, elementary assistant principal, elementary principal and a high school athletic director. He is currently an elementary school principal in Adams County. We have a lot of things in common, including our passion for children and learning.  We have two wonderful children of our own who, I am proud to say, are also educators.  Our son, Spencer, is 24 years old and is a high school math teacher and football coach in Adams County. Our daughter, Jordan, is 28 years old and a 7th and 8th grade math teacher in Weld County. She is married to my son-in-law, Tom, who is a probation officer.  We have two wonderful granddaughters.  Jaidyn who will be 4 years old in October and Avery who is 18 months. We LOVE being grandparents! As you can see, service to others is important to our family. I went into education because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. I remain in education because I still believe I can do that. I love what I do and could not imagine doing anything else. I can’t wait to meet all of you and your children. We are a community, so please reach out if you ever need anything. This is going to be a GREAT year!

Mrs. Elsenbast:
I love teaching at Patterson!  This is my 30th year teaching at Patterson and my 31st year of teaching in Jeffco. Patterson is the place to be! I love teaching and watching little minds grow into wonderful readers, writers, and mathematicians.  My favorite thing in the world is when the light bulb goes on because a kiddo gets it!
I have a wonderful family.  My son, Patrick, is in grad school at CSU.  He is getting his master’s in education. My youngest son, Thomas, is a senior at CSU as well. He is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. I love spending time with my husband, our two sons, and our dog.  In my free time I enjoy reading, running, and a good cup of tea!
My goal is to always create a safe and fun learning environment for children. I look forward to having a great year together!
